What is Bid Rank?

The relative position of a supplier's bid compared to all other bids in a sourcing event.

Definition

Bid rank is a supplier's position relative to other bidders in a live event. Rank-based feedback shows a participant where they stand without revealing the actual leading price, which is a deliberate middle ground between full transparency and a sealed process.

How it works in practice

A supplier sees that they are third. They know improvement is needed but not by how much, so they bid against their own economics rather than shaving a visible number by the minimum decrement.

Why it matters

Showing rank rather than price often produces better outcomes than full price visibility, because it removes the incentive to improve by exactly one decrement and no more.
